From April to June, we strengthened our partnerships with industry, expanded hands-on training opportunities, and celebrated the success of our students, apprentices, and staff. Highlights included our participation in the Trade & Tech Fit Expo, industry collaborations with organisations such as the Marina Industries Association, specialised workforce training for Fortescue, and recognition of our apprentices and educators at national industry events. These achievements reflect our ongoing commitment to delivering high-quality, industry-focused education while preparing learners with the skills and confidence to succeed in a rapidly evolving workforce. As we enter the second half of the year, AIE remains dedicated to innovation, continuous improvement, and supporting students, employers, and industry through practical, future-focused training.
The Australian Institute of Engineering (AIE) has taken another significant step in supporting Australia’s transition to cleaner, more sustainable manufacturing by delivering specialised training for Fortescue staff preparing to work on the company’s new Green Iron Metal Project. This initiative reflects AIE’s commitment to industry aligned, practical training that equips workers with the skills needed for emerging technologies and advanced manufacturing environments.
To deliver this program, AIE partnered with Dobbie, one of Australia’s longest standing and most respected independent jobbing foundries with extensive experience supporting critical infrastructure and advanced manufacturing sectors. The collaboration allowed participants to gain genuine, hands on experience in a live industrial environment, working alongside experienced foundry professionals and engaging directly with real world casting processes across a range of complex applications.
Fortescue’s Green Iron Metal Project represents a major shift in the way iron is processed in Australia, with a focus on reducing emissions and adopting innovative production methods. Preparing a workforce for this transition requires more than classroom learning, it demands exposure to the practical realities of metal casting, moulding, pattern work, and foundry operations.
A key highlight of this quarter has been the hands-on training sessions delivered in South Australia, including activities at the Dockyard facility. Apprentices gained valuable exposure to laminating techniques using a range of materials, developing an understanding of how different fibres and resins influence strength and performance. They also progressed their scaled boat projects—an essential component of their training that builds practical skills in plug and mould construction. AIE extends its appreciation to the Dockyard team for their continued support in delivering quality apprentice training.
AIE’s Broadmeadows campus remains a major hub for both apprentice and industry training. Equipped with a fully functional composites workshop, the campus provides apprentices with access to industry-standard tools, equipment, and materials, supporting hands-on skill development in a controlled learning environment.

This partnership highlights the value of collaboration between training providers and industry. By combining AIE’s educational expertise with Dobbie’s established operational capability, participants received a training experience that was both rigorous and deeply relevant to their future roles.

The event brought together students, educators, employers, and training providers to explore career opportunities in trades, engineering, manufacturing, and emerging technologies.
Throughout the two-day expo, the AIE team welcomed hundreds of visitors to our stand, where students discovered apprenticeship pathways, nationally recognised engineering qualifications, and the exciting career opportunities available in Australia's engineering and manufacturing industries.
One of the highlights of the event was AIE's interactive collaborative robot (cobot) demonstration. Students had the opportunity to see how a collaborative robot operates and learn how cobots are used alongside people in modern manufacturing environments. The demonstration gave visitors valuable insight into the role of automation, precision, and innovation in today's engineering workplaces.
Students also enjoyed taking part in a hands-on folding activity, where they transformed a pre-cut sheet into a practical phone stand to take home. This simple but engaging activity allowed students to experience the importance of accuracy, following a process, and working with engineered components while creating a useful item of their own.
The combination of advanced robotics and interactive learning made the AIE stand a popular destination throughout the expo. Students left with a better understanding of modern engineering technologies, practical manufacturing processes, and the diverse career opportunities available in the industry.

AIE's Executive Director of Education, Brett Ambrosio, was invited to participate in the conference panel discussion, "Pathways into Higher Education." Alongside leaders from the Australian Composites Manufacturing CRC and the Manufacturing Industry Skills Alliance, Brett shared insights into the vital role vocational education and training (VET) plays in developing Australia's advanced manufacturing workforce. The discussion explored stronger pathways between vocational and higher education, workforce mobility, and aligning education with industry needs.

The Australian Institute of Engineering (AIE) recently delivered a Basic Composites Workshop for apprentices from Penguin Composites Pty Ltd in Tasmania, reinforcing its commitment to providing practical, industry-focused training that supports workforce development.
The workshop was designed to strengthen apprentices' understanding of composite manufacturing through a combination of theory and hands-on learning. Participants explored key topics including composite materials, mould preparation, resin systems, lay-up methods, workplace safety, and quality practices used in modern composite manufacturing.
A highlight of the workshop was the practical team challenge, where apprentices designed and manufactured composite sandwich panels. Working collaboratively, they applied the knowledge gained throughout the program while developing valuable skills in planning, teamwork, and problem-solving. The completed panels were assessed for strength, stiffness, weight, and overall performance, providing apprentices with a practical understanding of material selection and manufacturing outcomes.
By delivering the workshop directly for Penguin Composites Pty Ltd, AIE ensured the training was closely aligned with industry requirements and provided apprentices with skills that could be immediately applied in the workplace.

Australia is transitioning to the new Workplace Exposure Limits (WEL) – Airborne Contaminants, which will replace the current Workplace Exposure Standards (WES) from 1 December 2026. During the transition period, businesses must continue to comply with the existing WES requirements while preparing for the implementation of the new national standards.
Airborne contaminants—including dusts, fumes, gases, vapours, and mists—are generated through many workplace processes and can present serious health risks if not properly managed. Exposure to these contaminants may lead to long-term health conditions, including occupational lung disease. Under work health and safety legislation, Persons Conducting a Business or Undertaking (PCBUs) have a responsibility to eliminate or minimise these risks, so far as is reasonably practicable, and ensure workplace exposure standards are not exceeded.
As part of its commitment to supporting industry and maintaining best practice, the Australian Institute of Engineering (AIE) is currently reviewing its internal processes and updating existing training resources to align with the new Workplace Exposure Limits. AIE is also developing new training programs that will provide learners and industry with the latest knowledge on airborne contaminant management, workplace monitoring, compliance requirements, and safe work practices.
These initiatives will ensure AIE continues to deliver practical, industry-relevant training that reflects current regulatory requirements and supports safer workplaces across Australia's engineering and manufacturing sectors.

The tailored program supports the ongoing development of the Monash Formula SAE Team and its Makerspace facility, equipping participants with the practical skills required to manufacture high-quality composite components for future race vehicles. AIE proudly congratulates Thomas McNamara on successfully completing his Certificate III in Engineering – Composites Trade. Throughout his apprenticeship with Garry Rogers Motorsport (GRM), Thomas has developed the technical knowledge, practical skills, and teamwork required to succeed in the fast-paced motorsport industry.
Driven by a lifelong passion for motorsport, Thomas began his apprenticeship in 2022 after securing a position as a Composite Apprentice with Garry Rogers Motorsport. What started as an opportunity to turn his passion into a career has become a rewarding professional journey.
During his apprenticeship, Thomas gained hands-on experience across the entire composites manufacturing process—from mould making and component lay-up to resin infusion, trimming, and finishing composite parts. He credits his apprenticeship with providing the confidence and practical skills needed to contribute effectively within GRM's composites department.
Reflecting on his experience, Thomas says one of the most valuable lessons he learned was the importance of teamwork.
"Working together as a team to achieve our goals and meeting deadlines in the motorsport environment has been the most valuable lesson from my apprenticeship."
Thomas also spoke highly of his training experience with AIE.
"At AIE I learnt all about composites through my online units, assessments and practical workshops. One of the biggest projects was building a fishing boat plug and producing a mould from it. Brett, Murray and Scott were great instructors to learn from throughout my apprenticeship."
For anyone considering an apprenticeship, Thomas offers simple but valuable advice:
